Paola Laverde is a Berkeley Rent Board commissioner serving her second year as the Rent Board’s vice-chair. During her tenure Ms. Laverde instituted the “TIP of the Month” outreach program to promote Rent Board Services on social media and on its website, as well as updated Berkeley’s Elevator Code to improve protections for disabled tenants. Currently, Commissioner Laverde is Chair of the Habitability and Sustainability committee as well as the Chair of the ad hoc committee which is studying the effects of the Costa-Hawkins Rental Housing Act; later this year, the Rent Board will be holding a hearing to put on the record the effects this law has had in Berkeley, the Bay Area, and beyond. Ms. Laverde has lived through an Ellis Act eviction and has first-hand experience of landlord harassment and bullying. Her experiences as a tenant fuels her passion to give voice to those who have been ignored and are negatively impacted by the current housing system.
Ms. Laverde is a former bilingual broadcast journalist, legal courtroom interpreter, and video producer for government and nonprofit organizations. She is currently a public information specialist for the state of California.
